Chapter 7

Kiss The Girls

One balmy summer’s evening in Los Angeles in 2011, newly minted superstar Nicki Minaj left the popular Hollywood restaurant Katsuya and performed the usual paparazzi shuffle. With her assistant, hype man and oft-rumoured boyfriend Safaree “SB” Samuels at her side, her bodyguard and driver in front of her, she made her way through the throng of loud and pushy photographers scrambling to snap photos of the pint-sized provocateur. It was a dance Nicki was used to by now and she could have done it blindfolded. But as she stepped up to enter her waiting SUV, the rapper heard something that stopped her cold. “Nicki! What do you think it will take for us to finally get a gay rapper?” one of the videographers yelled out, with high hopes that the star would gift them with a precious soundbite perfect for the following morning’s headlines. She did not disappoint.

“I am a gay rapper! You already got one!” she shouted.

And by most accounts, she is right.

Well, she is the closest the world has experienced to having a mainstream and beloved openly gay rapper – except for one small detail: despite her bewildering outburst at Katsuya, she denies that she is actually gay. But this hasn’t stopped the rumour mill churning and Nicki’s overwhelming insistence on expressing her love and adoration for her female fans has only served to fuel the gossip further. In 2009, during an interview with VladTV, the male interviewer asked her, “What does it take for a guy to get your attention?” She replied, “Actually, I like for girls to approach me. [They should] just be cute and be themselves, you know how I love you girls. Kisses and hugs to all of my bad bitches. The guys don’t have any fun parts that I can squeeze!”

In 2009, SOHH.com asked Nicki about Amber Rose, Kanye West’s former girlfriend, reportedly hitting on her in public. The rapper says she was extremely surprised by the gesture. “I was very shocked. It was funny. She said it to me when we met in person so I was like, ‘Whoa she’s dead serious,’ cause she put it on Twitter. I was just laughing like everybody else probably. I had to take it in a little bit.” But, Nicki also admitted to being slightly flattered, perpetuating the eyebrow-raising surrounding her possible bi-curiosity. “She’s a dope girl. She’s real funny. She just took an interest in me. I guess that’s a good thing when a bad bitch likes you, you know?”

Nicki made these comments jokingly, but it certainly wasn’t the first time the singer has made a statement creating questions over the nature of her sexual orientation. Her breakthrough mix-tape, Beam Me Up Scotty, featured a song called ‘Still I Rise’, on which she raps from the perspective of a hater talking about her: “You know her name Minaj/She a lesbian.” On ‘Go Hard’ she rhymes: “And I only stop for pedestrians/Or a real, real bad lesbian.” Such verses indicate her awareness
